EPA Inspection Reports MP&W in Full Compliance

At the monthly Muscatine Board of Water, Electric and Communications Trustees meeting, General Manager Sal LoBianco advised the Trustees of a successful unannounced air compliance inspection by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at MP&W’s Power Plant. The inspector completed spot checks on 38 different aspects of MP&W’s Title V operating permit requirements. The inspector’s final report summarized the findings and indicated full compliance with all air permit requirements.

MP&W is very proud of its culture of proactive environmental compliance and remains committed to its Core Value of Environmental Stewardship. MP&W staff has developed strong working relationships with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and EPA, which allows it to stay ahead of any potential issues. LoBianco concluded, “Our staff are dedicated to their compliance activities and this successful inspection is a clear indication of that. We are very proud of the efforts of our Generation and Environmental department staff whose continued diligence from day-to-day, year-to-year make these kinds of unannounced inspections go so smoothly.”

Efforts from MP&W and other local industry support the ongoing improvement in Muscatine’s air quality. Muscatine’s air quality has improved significantly and continues to look great. The chart below shows the local SO2 readings over the last five years, which clearly highlights this positive trend. In fact, beginning in spring 2019, Muscatine is expected to begin the process of transitioning out of “non-attainment” for SO2.
