Blue Zones

Muscatine Power and Water’s Administration/Operations Center (A/O) and Generation Site have both achieved designation as Blue Zones Worksites® . The announcement capped an organization-wide effort by employees and leadership to live healthier lifestyles at work and at home. Blue Zones Project Muscatine staff members joined MP&W for official ribbon cuttings Friday at both the A/O Center and power plant wrapping up a week of celebratory activities.

“I’m proud of our employee team that led the effort to move the organization through the process of obtaining designation of both MP&W worksites,” said Sal LoBianco, General Manager. “As a community based organization we are excited to be part of this terrific effort to help Muscatine residents live longer, healthier, better lives. As an organization one of our critical issues is employee health and wellbeing, working to achieve the Blue Zones Worksite designation fit well with our plan to implement initiatives that positively impact our employees’ health and well-being.”

Earlier in the week, employees at both locations participated in group walks, enjoyed free fruit in their break rooms, received Blue Zones t-shirts and rounded out the week with the ribbon cutting ceremonies. The Blue Zones Project is dedicated to helping towns become better places to live, work and play.

The Blue Zones Worksite designation is one way to measure and reward the progress various organizations are achieving in our community. Blue Zones Worksite is one of four designations available for organizations and has as its goal to empower employees to be happier, healthier and more productive by creating healthier work environments.

To qualify, each worksite must; have at least 25% of its workers sign the Blue Zones Personal Pledge and complete one action, earn at least two-thirds of the total points by implementing pledge actions, and implement at least one pledge action from each category (Leadership, Purpose, Habitat/Physical Environment, Engagement/Creation of Social Networks, Policies & Benefits, Well-Being Solutions). The MP&W designation application highlighted many of the initiatives and activities taken by employees and management to make the organization’s physical environment, policies, benefits and social interactions conducive to achieving the health and wellness objectives of by The Blue Zones Project.
