MPW, Stanley Consultants Continue Nearly Century-Long Partnership in Powering the Future

April 22, 2026

Muscatine Power and Water (MPW) and Stanley Consultants share nearly a century -long partnership rooted in a shared commitment to reliable service, thoughtful planning and continued investment in the local community. That collaboration dates back to 1939, when Stanley Consultants designed MPW’s Unit 5, helping shape the Utility’s early generation infrastructure and laying the foundation for decades of progress.

Over the years, the partnership has delivered major energy projects that strengthened local reliability while anticipating future power needs. In 1983, MPW brought Unit 9 online with engineering support from Stanley Consultants. At the time, Unit 9 was the Utility’s cleanest burning generating unit and featured flue gas desulfurization technology that significantly reduced emissions.

Today, Stanley Consultants is helping MPW carry that same forward-thinking approach into its Power the Future strategy, serving as lead designer for two of the Utility’s next local resources: EcoGen 10, and Muscatine Solar 2.

“Stanley Consultants is honored to serve as engineer of record for Muscatine Solar 2 with Muscatine Power and Water,” said Lance Sulzen, Stanley Consultants’ energy market leader. “This project underscores our ongoing commitment to MPW’s reliable, sustainable power supply and the community’s long-term energy needs.”

Founded in Muscatine and now recognized nationally and globally as an industry-leading engineering firm, Stanley Consultants has remained a trusted partner to MPW for generations. The firm’s long-standing relationship with the Utility reflects deep institutional knowledge, continuity and a shared understanding of the community MPW serves.

Most recently engineering and design work has supported MPW’s development of EcoGen 10, a modern natural-gas, combined heat and power generation facility. The project is designed to strengthen dependable and affordable power for customers while providing important support to the regional electric grid.

Looking ahead, the next phase of Powering the Future includes the anticipated development of Muscatine Solar 2 (MS2), an additional 24-megawatt utility-scale solar array. MS2 represents another step in MPW’s continued investment in a diversified resource mix and cleaner energy options for the community.

Leveraging Stanley Consultants’ global experience alongside its strong local roots underscores the value of having world-class expertise based in Muscatine. When the Utility and its engineering partner both live and work in the same community, the commitment to quality, safety, and long-term results is further strengthened.

“Partnering with a local engineering firm that’s also recognized worldwide as an industry leader is especially meaningful to the MPW leadership team and Board of Trustees,” said Gage Huston, general manager of Muscatine Power and Water. “Powering the Future reflects a shared commitment between MPW and Stanley Consultants to invest locally, deliver long-term value, and advance projects that benefit our community for generations to come.”
